How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Accepted Answer

Design & Planning typically takes 4–8 weeks — measurement, selections, layout, permits, and construction documents. Procurement adds 6–12 weeks depending on cabinet lead times; standard finishes ship in 2–4 weeks, custom colors can add another 4–8. If your package includes installation, Construction runs another 4–10 weeks. Total from signed contract to final walkthrough on a Design, Sales & Installation project: 16–28 weeks, depending on cabinet finish and the scope of the work.

Question 2

What's included in a Bay State kitchen remodel?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your package. Sales-Only covers cabinetry product only — you manage your own installation. Design & Sales adds a complete design package: site measurement, 3D renders, elevations, full cabinet spec book, appliance schedule, and two revision rounds, with procurement through the showroom. Design, Sales & Installation is the full project: everything in Design & Sales plus demolition, permits, cabinetry install, stone fabrication and install, backsplash, plumbing, electrical, and a final walkthrough. That last package runs under Bay State Remodeling, our build crew — one company, one contract, no handoffs.

Question 3

Do you work with GCs or handle everything in-house?

Accepted Answer

We do both, depending on your package. For Design & Sales (design without the build), we provide the full design package and spec book — your GC builds from it. For Design, Sales & Installation, we act as the general contractor: we pull permits, manage trades, and assign a single project lead from first measure to punch list. That work runs under Bay State Remodeling. If you have a GC you trust, we are glad to work alongside them on the design and procurement side.

Question 4

Framed vs. frameless cabinets — what's the practical difference?

Accepted Answer

A framed cabinet has a solid wood face frame attached to the front of the box. The doors and drawers mount to that frame. Frameless (or full-access) cabinets attach hardware directly to the box sides, which gives you slightly more interior width — useful when you're fitting large pots or pull-out trash drawers. Framed construction is more traditional in look; frameless reads cleaner and more contemporary. Both hold up well if built with plywood boxes.

What does 'inset' mean and why does it cost more?

Accepted Answer

Inset doors sit flush inside the face frame rather than overlapping it. The gap between door and frame has to be perfectly consistent — typically 1/16" or 3/32" — which means tighter manufacturing tolerances and more time fitting each door at installation. The look is furniture-grade and traditional. You pay for the precision, not just the style.

Full overlay vs. partial overlay — does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Full overlay doors cover almost the entire face frame, so you see very little frame between adjacent doors. Partial overlay exposes more of the frame. Most kitchens we specify today use full overlay — it's cleaner, and the hardware options are wider. Partial overlay is sometimes used to match an existing kitchen or to hit a tighter budget on a specific line.

Plywood box vs. MDF box — which should I ask for?

Accepted Answer

Plywood boxes hold screws better over time, handle moisture better, and are lighter. MDF boxes can be finished more smoothly and are sometimes used in painted slab-door lines where the visual is paramount. For most Greater Boston kitchens — where humidity swings with the seasons — we default to plywood box construction. MDF center panels in doors are fine; it's MDF boxes where you want to pay attention.

Why does lead time vary so much between finishes?

Accepted Answer

Cabinet manufacturers run standard (Signature) colors on a continuous production cycle — those ship in two to four weeks. Designer or custom colors are batched less frequently, so they add four to eight weeks. If your project has a firm start date, we lock in your color at contract. If you're flexible on color, we'll show you what ships fastest and confirm lead times before anything is ordered.

What is the spec book and why do I get one?

Accepted Answer

The spec book is a written document listing every cabinet by part number, finish, and dimension — plus countertop material, edge profile, hardware SKU, and appliance model. It's what your contractor builds from, what gets submitted for permits, and what you use to verify delivery. If a cabinet arrives wrong, the spec book is the reference. We include it in every project, including Design & Sales engagements.

Can I get the look of marble without the maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Several quartz lines now produce Calacatta and Statuario patterns that read as marble from two feet away. The main trade-offs: quartz is a consistent pattern repeated across slabs, while natural marble has unique veining that never repeats. Quartz resists staining and etching better; marble develops a patina that some homeowners prefer. We have both in the showroom — the comparison is easier in person than in photos.

How long does a full kitchen remodel typically take?

From signed contract to final walkthrough on a Design, Sales & Installation project: 16 to 28 weeks, depending on cabinet finish and scope. The long lead items are usually cabinetry (4–12 weeks depending on finish) and stone fabrication (templated after cabinets are set, then 2–3 weeks to slab). Demo and rough work go quickly — it's the sequencing of trades that drives the calendar. We hold the delivery schedule and flag anything that slips before it affects your move-out date.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. Permits for electrical, plumbing, and any structural work are pulled by the licensed subs on our team. We schedule inspections and make sure the job doesn't close without a sign-off. Greater Boston building departments vary — some are faster than others — but we factor typical inspection timelines into the project schedule upfront.

Can I supply my own appliances?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We'll incorporate any appliances you've already purchased or have on order. We'll need confirmed model numbers before finalizing the cabinet layout, since appliance dimensions drive cutout sizes, filler widths, and panel depths. If you haven't chosen appliances yet, we can share the spec sheet for any model we've installed and let you decide from there.

Semi-custom is faster to produce and costs less; custom makes sense when you have unusual dimensions, a specific finish not in a standard line, or a design that requires non-standard heights or depths. Most Greater Boston projects we specify use semi-custom from lines like Fabuwood, Mid Continent, or StarMark — they cover the range without the lead times.

Do you provide 3D renderings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Once we've taken measurements and locked in your door style and finish, we produce 3D renderings showing your kitchen from multiple angles. You'll see how the layout reads, where shadows fall, and whether the island proportions work with the perimeter. Renderings are included in the Design & Sales and Design, Sales & Installation packages — not in the Sales-Only (product-only) track.

Question 21

Can you match cabinetry I already have in another part of the kitchen?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes. If your existing cabinets are from a brand we carry, we can often source the same door style and finish and match them precisely. If they're from a different manufacturer, we'll identify the closest equivalent and show you the comparison in the showroom. Paint-grade finishes are generally more matchable than stained wood, since stains interact with the grain in ways that differ between species. We'll tell you upfront whether a match is achievable or whether blending is the more realistic outcome.

Question 22

What warranty comes with the cabinetry?

Accepted Answer

The brands we carry — Fabuwood, Mid Continent, Europa, StarMark, and Mantra — each carry a limited lifetime warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship under normal residential use. The specifics vary by manufacturer and product line, but all cover the box, the door, and the finish against manufacturing defects. We provide the warranty documentation at the time of delivery. Installation work performed under Bay State Remodeling carries a separate workmanship warranty; we cover that in the project agreement.
